Stewarts Oil has been a family-run business since 1880, deeply rooted in Boyle, Co. Roscommon, Ireland.
Originally founded by Hugh Stewart, the company began with a mill built on the banks of the Boyle River, where he implemented innovative hydroelectric power.
By 1901, Stewarts made a significant contribution to the town by lighting Boyle with direct current electricity. For over six decades, Stewarts were the primary supplier of power and animal feeds in the region, with the mill playing a key role in its growth. Still supplying power today.
The Stewart family continued to innovate and expand their operations over the years. Under Hugh’s son, Joseph Stewart, the company modernized, especially in the 1940s and 50s when it began supplying animal feed on a larger scale. In the 1960s, the company automated the mill, implementing storage silos and modern grinding systems. This modernisation allowed Stewarts Oil to keep pace with growing demand and technological advancements.
Now managed by the fourth generation – Stewarts Oil has evolved into a forward-thinking company that maintains its commitment to quality and innovation.
With updated facilities and new technology, the company continues to supply electric power to grid, solid fuels and home heating oil to homes and businesses across the region.
Stewarts Oil remains a trusted family enterprise with a legacy that has spanned over 130 years.
